
The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Dr Jean Ping, pays tribute to the African Development Bank (AfDB) contribution to the AU pledging conference for the Horn of Africa
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, August 26, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Chairperson of the Commission, Dr. Jean Ping, has expressed gratitude to the President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Donald Kaberuka, for the substantial contribution he announced for sustainable livestock development in the Horn of Africa.
It is recalled that during the Pledging Conference organized by the African Union
Commission on 25 August 2011 in Addis Ababa, Dr. Donald Kaberuka announced that a total of US$ 300 Million will be committed in the IGAD region between 2011-2013 in support of long-term programme to build resilience through water and agriculture interventions and promotion of economic opportunities in the Horn of Africa.
During this pledging Conference, the AfDB President, Dr. Donald Kaberuka, said “time has come to put an end to the repeated cycles of droughts and famine in the Horn of Africa. He observed that, while AfDB “has no humanitarian mandate”, it had made a contribution of four million dollars through competent organizations.
Dr. Kaberuka indicated that AfDB had concluded a comprehensive study on sustanaible livestock development in the Horn of Africa, and a fifteen-year investment programme, which has the potential to change the dynamics of livestock management in the region-critical element in building resistance.
