Somalia Journalists’ Union Condemns Bomb Attack on Radio Station
MOGADISHU, Somalia, August 26, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) vehemently condemns a bomb attack on Daljir radio station that injured a security guard and damaged the premises of the radio in the early hours of Friday, 26 August 2011 in Galkayo town in the semiautonomous regions of Puntland in Somalia.
“The bomb attack wounded one of the security guard of the radio and damaged the building of the radio,” said Abdifitah Omar, Director of the Radio. The management of Daljir Radio said the radio is independent and works for the public. He demanded from the authorities to investigate the matter immediately.
“We cannot take the incident as normal violent act. We expect a swift and thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice,” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General.
This is the second time that Daljir radio station was violently attacked by unknown assailants and no action was taken against perpetrators. NUSOJ believes that any threat to media houses, journalists and other media workers constitute an attack on the freedom of the media.
