Statement attributable to the Spokesperson of the UN Secretary-General on the presidential run-off election in Cape Verde
NEW YORK, August 25, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Secretary-General welcomes the holding of the presidential election in Cape Verde on 21 August, which was widely acclaimed by international observers as peaceful and credible. He congratulates Mr. Jorge Carlos Fonseca for winning the run-off election, and wishes him all success in the performance of his new functions.
The Secretary-General also commends the people of Cape Verde for participating in the voting in an orderly manner, which testifies to their commitment to preserving and enhancing the country’s long-standing tradition of democracy and good governance. The Secretary-General expresses the readiness of the United Nations to continue supporting the people and the Government of Cape Verde in their efforts to promote peace and development in their country and in the sub-region.
