Sweden / An extra SEK 200 million to people in need in the Horn of Africa
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, July 28, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — An extra SEK 200 million to people in need in the Horn of Africa
“There is an imminent risk that famine will spread in the next few months,” says Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson. “The humanitarian system, the UN and NGOs are prepared to do more to save lives and alleviate suffering. But there are two obstacles: the lack of money and the lack of humanitarian access. Sweden’s contribution to the Horn of Africa, SEK 700 million including today’s decision, is important. But other donors must also contribute. And the militant Islamist resistance group Al-Shabaab in Somalia must heed the UN Security Council’s demands to allow humanitarian access.”
Time and place:
The Government decided today to increase Sida s humanitarian allocation to help people in need in the Horn of Africa. The money will go towards meeting basic needs such as health, food, water, sanitation and protection of children.
