US Department of State / Status of Aid to Malawi (Taken Question)

WASHINGTON, July 26, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Taken Question

Office of the Spokesperson

Washington, DC

Question Taken at the July 25, 2011 Daily Press Briefing

July 25, 2011

QUESTION: Any plans to stop aid to Malawi? Is the Millennium Challenge Compact at risk?

ANSWER: As we said in our statement, the United States strongly condemns the use of force by Malawian authorities on July 20 to prevent peaceful demonstrations, as well as the ban imposed on all private radio stations reporting on the demonstrations. The U.S. government is deeply concerned by this week’s events in Malawi and calls into question the government’s commitment to good governance principles as captured by MCC’s scorecard. In light of this week’s events, MCC is closely monitoring the actions of the Government of Malawi and reviewing MCC operations.
