Lybia – International arrest warrant for Gaddafi
ROME, Italy, June 28, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The International Criminal Court at The Hague has issued an arrest warrant for the Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, for crimes against humanity. The judges granted the request put forward by prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo. The same request was also granted for Gaddafi’s son, Saif al-Islam, and for the head of the Libyan secret service, Abdullah al-Senussi, also accused of crimes against humanity. The Court has issued a mandate to issue the arrest warrant with immediate effect.
Foreign Minister Franco Frattini had also called for an arrest warrant to be issued, just a few hours before the judges announced their decision. “The families of those who died as victims of the horrible deeds of this regime clearly expect this, as indeed does international justice”.
And today the European Union underscored that Gaddafi can no longer take part in any negotiations. “Our position is very clear”, explained the Commission’s spokesperson, Michael Mann. “Gaddafi must leave power at the earliest possible date and may no longer be involved in any way in any negotiating process. We want the conflict to end, and we want Gaddafi to leave so that the transition period leading to elections can begin”.
