Foreign Minister Spindelegger on the reform process in Morocco
VIENNA, Austria, June 24, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Following the session of the main committee for the preparation of the European Council, Foreign Minister and Vice-Chancellor Michael Spindelegger expressed his position on the reforms in Morocco. He welcomed the proposals by the King of Morocco for a constitutional reform which are to be put to a referendum scheduled for the 1st of July. “If this reform is adopted by the people, it will represent another significant step in Morocco’s democratic renewal process” said the Foreign Minister.
The intention to strengthen the role of the Parliament and to enshrine judicial independence, the rule of law, and human rights in the constitution will be in compliance with the objectives of the “advanced status” enjoyed by Morocco in its relations with the European Union.
“Austria and the European Union shall continue to actively accompany and support the Morocco’s reform process”, said Spindelegger.
