UNAMID Head, South Darfur Wali discuss operational concerns, release of staff
UNAMID Joint Special Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari, accompanied by senior Mission officials, met today in Nyala with the Wali (Governor) of South Darfur Abdulhameed Musa Kasha. The visit served as a follow-up to a meeting held in Khartoum last week in which the arrest of UNAMID national staff was raised.
The JSR pressed for access to the Mission staff member, detained in Nyala last month by Sudanese officials, and also called upon the Government to lift movement restrictions on the delivery of humanitarian assistance in the region.
The talks proved beneficial as UNAMID will visit the staff member tomorrow. The parties will also re-establish a joint technical committee tasked with looking into operational concerns between them. The South Darfur Government and UNAMID will meet again on 30 June.
UNAMID patrols
UNAMID military conducted 142 patrols including routine, short-range, long-range, night and humanitarian escort patrols covering 96 villages and internally displaced person (IDP) camps.
UNAMID police advisors conducted 108 patrols in villages and IDP camps.
