
Meeting of Minister Frattini with the United Nations Special Envoy for Libya, Abdul Khatib Rome 28 April 2011
ROME, Italy, April 29, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The cardinal role of the United Nations in seeking a political solution to the crisis in Libya was the focus of Minister Frattini’s meeting with the United Nations Special Envoy for Libya, Abdul Khatib, on the evening of 28 April 2011.
During their talk the outlook for a ceasefire and a political solution that would ensure a united, democratic and prosperous Libya were discussed. From this perspective, the opening as soon as possible of humanitarian corridors under the control of the United Nations to meet the most immediate needs of the population was urged.
In the run-up to the second Contact Group Meeting in Rome on 5 May 2011, a number of possible measures that could be taken under the United Nations umbrella were examined. The aim here would be to enable the Transitional National Council to obtain funding to provide essential services for the civilian population.
The UN Special Envoy has asked for Italy to maintain close coordination in managing the Libya crisis. He thanked Minister Frattini for the effort made by Italian Development Cooperation in providing assistance and identifying sectors for initiatives to support economic growth.
