UNAMID Leadership meets members of Darfur Movement
UNAMID Joint Special Representative Ibrahim Gambari today met with members of the SLA/Historical Movement. The group briefed the JSR on the background of the Movement, its interests and objectives.
On his part, JSR Gambari reaffirmed UNAMID’s continued commitment and support to the peace process.
“UNAMID is your partner for peace in Darfur. Our primary responsibility is security and to provide protection to the civilian population,” the JSR said.
He also highlighted efforts being undertaken by the Mission to achieve peace in Darfur, including delivery of humanitarian assistance, as well as UNAMID’s support for programmes that promote voluntary return of displaced persons, and early recovery and development.
SLA/ Historical Movement signed a peace agreement with the Government of the Sudan on 18 January 2011.
UNAMID patrols
UNAMID military conducted 189 patrols including routine, short-range, long-range, night and humanitarian escort patrols covering 86 villages and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. UNAMID Police advisors conducted 97 patrols in villages and IDP camps.
