Focus Libya / Frattini meets with the Contact Group to build a political solution together

ROME, Italy, March 29, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Once the command has been handed over to NATO, discussions in London will turn to post-Gaddafi. “The institutional duty”, stated Minister Frattini, participating in the Contact Group meeting, “is to achieve a shared solution: the means is the protection of civilians, the end is a new Libya”.
The first meeting of the Contact Group for Libya, whose task will be to convey the message that the international community—and not only the West—stands united behind this intervention, but also to “politically pilot” the operation, will bring together a total of 40 or so foreign ministers—among them many Europeans, the US, the UAE, Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco and Lebanon, in addition to Turkey, and representatives of the Holy See and 5 international organisations: the UN, with Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, NATO, the EU, the Arab League and the African Union.
At the London meeting, Italy, which is a full-fledged participant in the mission dictated by UN resolution, intends to contribute to achieving a “shared solution” leading to a political road-map.
Obligatory are a ceasefire and an inclusive encounter with the Libyan community that paves the way to a “democratic, sovereign and united Libya”.
On the eve of his participation in the Contact Group Minister Frattini had a long and cordial telephone conversation with Secretary of the Libyan National Council Mustafa Abdul Jalil, confirming Italy’s full support for the Libyan opposition’s efforts to build a “new democratic and united Libya”.
