Statement by Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1970 concerning the situation in Libya

 

 

TOKYO, Japan, February 28, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Government of Japan expresses serious concern over the situation in Libya, in which a large number of people are killed or injured, and strongly condemns the use of flagrant violence by the Libyan authorities against people taking part in peaceful demonstrations. The Government of Japan urges the Libyan authorities including Leader Muammar Al Qadthafi to immediately halt the violence against people of Libya.

On Saturday, February 26 (New York time, Japan time: Sunday, 27), the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1970 concerning the situation in Libya. This resolution represents a clear global message to the Libyan authorities. The Government of Japan strongly calls for the Libyan authorities to observe the Resolution immediately.
