African Stock Investment Competition’s Elliott Speaks at Howard University African Business Conference
WASHINGTON, February 25, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — As the African Stock Investment Competition (ASIC) gears up, Lauri Elliott shares insights about entrepreneurship and capital markets in Africa with young, bright leaders at the 4th Annual Howard University African Business Conference.
Get ready for the African Stock Investment Competition 2011 kickoff on Monday, February 28th. As a lead up to the kickoff, Lauri Elliott, Lead Coordinator for ASIC and Director of Afribiz Media, and Claude W. Roxborough III, U.S. President of the South African Chamber of Commerce in America (a lead partner of ASIC), will speak on an entrepreneurship panel at the 4th Annual Howard University African Business Conference, February 25th-26th.
This year’s conference theme is Africa Re-Defined: A Renaissance in African Business. The primary aim of the Annual Conference is to highlight business and career opportunities in African countries, as well as to create a platform showcasing the positively thriving economic and business sectors of the African continent to the global community. In addition, it helps to create a networking channel for students and professionals in the United States, who are interested in business in Africa, and businessmen and women all over the world, who are seeking to discover and develop new talent for the continent.
“The purpose of this conference aligns so well with the mandate of ASIC. It helps to open the world of business and investment to our young, bright leaders. It only takes a spark to change a young leader’s career path and this conference could be the spark that turns the focus of more of our young leaders to Africa. I am privileged to be a part of this year’s conference,” says Lauri Elliott, Director of Afribiz Media.
Ethleen Sawyerr, a Corporate Co-Chair for the conference this year, also sees the complementary mandates of the two events: “ASIC is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about investment in Africa. Similar to the Howard University African Business Conference, the Competition enables students to learn how they can partake in the development of Africa through the application of knowledge and finances. Despite tough economic times, Africa is still filled with vast opportunities for business ventures. This Competition creates a platform to further catalyze the building of African economies.”
The conference also provides the first opportunity for people to check out the book Redefining Business in the New Africa: Shifting Strategies to be Successful. The book includes overviews of different market opportunities in business and investment, including the capital markets, in Africa. It also weaves together a picture of Africa’s position in global business going into the future, and shares emerging strategies for doing business on the continent.
After the conference, students still have a chance to register for the African Stock Investment Competition (ASIC), comprised of two levels: Level 1 Individual Competition (weekly quizzes) and Level 2 Team Trading Competition, which offer students the opportunity to win cash or prizes, as well as explore the African stock markets. The lead partners – Afribiz, Africa investor, South African Chamber of Commerce in America (SACCA), and Universal Creativ Solutions – decided to extend the opportunities to participate after getting feedback from students.
Students may register for the ASIC Level 1 Individual Competition any time through the competition period – February 28 through mid-May. They are eligible to compete in any of the quizzes for each African stock exchange as long as they meet the requirements and are registered the day before any particular quiz in which they would like to participate starts.
The registration period for the ASIC Level 2 Team Trading Competition has been extended through March 12, 2011. ASIC Level 2 will run from March 14, 2011 to the end of September 2011. Teams should register as soon as possible so they can become familiar with the virtual trading platform and research the companies into which they want to invest their portfolio funds (1,000,000 virtual Rands).
