Readout of the UN Secretary-General’s meeting with the President of the Transitional Federal Government of the Republic of Somalia, H.E. Mr. Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, on the margins of the AU Summit

 

 

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, January 31, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Secretary-General met with the President of the Transitional Federal Government of the Republic of Somalia, H.E. Mr. Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, on the margins of the AU Summit.

 

They discussed the cooperation between the UN and the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia, and the challenges ahead, including the completion of the transition.

 

President Sheikh Sharif presented the Government’s vision for the management of the priority tasks for the remaining transition period. They discussed the need for the TFG to accelerate the outreach and reconciliation efforts, intensify the constitution-making efforts, and work on a security strategy that would allow a better and secured delivery of basic social services to the population.

 

The Secretary-General and President Sheikh Sharif also discussed the humanitarian situation and the protection of civilians in Somalia.
