Côte d’Ivoire / UN Human Rights Council to discuss Côte d’Ivoire
ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, December 22, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — As the UN Human Rights Council (the Council) prepares to hold a Special Session on the situation of human rights in Côte d’Ivoire on 23 December in Geneva, Amnesty International calls on the Council’s members to end the ongoing human rights violations.
Amnesty International calls on the Council to:
• Demand that the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) act robustly in implementing fully its mandate to uphold human rights in Côte d’Ivoire.
• Adopt measures aimed deliberately at dissuading perpetrators and instigators of disappearances, extrajudicial executions and other serious human rights violations from committing further violations.
• Urge the international community to ensure that the UNOCI is provided immediately with all resources needed to implement its mandate and end the alarming escalation in human rights violations in Côte d’Ivoire.
• Recall the declaration made by Côte d’Ivoire before the International Criminal Court that it accepts its jurisdiction with respect to crimes committed on its territory since the events of 19 September 2002.
• Call for all those responsible for human rights abuses to be held accountable.
• Ensure that it is kept regularly and promptly informed of developments on the ground and to be ready to resume its Special Session to consider information received that indicates new or persistent serious human rights violations.
