ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, November 24, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — UNOCI chief meets UNICEF West Africa regional director
“UNICEF is ready to play its role at the side of a new government and we will do everything possible to ensure that children’s issues regarding health, protection, education, etc, are included in the new government’s programme, said the Regional Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Gianfranco Rotigliano, after a meeting with the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Y.J. Choi, in Abidjan, on Wednesday.
Mr. Rotigliano, who is in charge of Central and West Africa, explained that his visit was aimed at assuring Mr. Choi, three days before the second round of the presidential election, of the UN agency’s commitment to playing its role in the crisis-resolution process. “The regional directors of United Nations agencies had already started to set up measures to support the process,” he said. In this regard, he announced the holding of a meeting by the “La Côte d’Ivoire + 5″ Group on 25 November 2010, in Dakar, to discuss how to conduct a successful second round.
The Group, according to the Regional Director, is composed of Côte d’Ivoire and five neighbouring countries. Its objective is to support the efforts being made in Côte d’Ivoire to achieve an effective and successful crisis-resolution.
“We hope that everything will be smooth and correct and peace will be re-established in this country,” Mr. Rotigliano concluded.
