
Côte d’Ivoire / Ivorian election will take place as planned, says UNOCI head YJ Choi
ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, October 26, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Y.J. Choi, today held a video-linked press conference with international correspondents based at United Nations headquarters in New York, on the upcoming presidential election scheduled for 31 October 2010.
Mr. Choi said he was confident that the election would take place as the main challenges which were facing the electoral process had been overcome. He said that according to the timetable drawn up by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the provisional results of the presidential election will be first announced by the Commission on 3 November, after which the Constitutional Council will proclaim the final results on 10 November before they are certified by the Special Representative.
He said that if there was no clear winner after the first round, then the second round will be organised on 28 November 2010. The Special Representative also responded to questions from a journalist on the arms embargo and a report on increased violence against women in the west of Côte d’Ivoire as reported by an international human rights NGO.
