NEW YORK, September 27, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — On 27 September 2010, officials from the Sudanese Government, African Union (AU) and United Nations will convene at the UN Headquarters in New York for the ninth meeting of the Tripartite Mechanism on the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

Background
Following consultations between the three parties on the margins of the AU Summit of July 2008 in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt, the Tripartite Mechanism was established with the aim of expediting UNAMID’s deployment and promoting a constructive relationship between the Sudanese Government, the AU and the UN. Since then, the forums have offered an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the three parties for the benefit of the people of Darfur.

Recent outcomes
In the most recent meetings, participants agreed that, as UNAMID reached near full deployment, the focus of the Mission and the Tripartite would shift from deployment to the effective employment of the Mission’s resources toward the full implementation of its mandate.

The last meeting of the mechanism, the eighth Tripartite, hosted by the AU in Addis Ababa in May 2010, led to concurrence on outcomes in relation to: security; medical evacuations; investigations of security incidents; movement restrictions; deployment of aviation assets; and, land for the construction of community policing centres. It was also agreed that in the future the mechanism should hold strategic level meetings every three months, complemented by monthly working-level sessions on operational issues.

Agenda
The ninth session of the mechanism is to largely focus on the Darfur peace process and the security of Darfur’s civilian population, most notably the region’s internally displaced persons.

UNAMID Representation
UNAMID Joint Special Representative Ibrahim Gambari will lead a delegation of senior Mission officials.
