Security situation in Darfur


No significant incidents were reported in the past 24 hours.

Two rival Darfur tribes sign reconciliation agreement
Two Darfur tribes, the Misseriya and Rezeigat Nouaiba, yesterday signed a reconciliation agreement in Zalingei, West Darfur. The ceremony, held at the local University, was attended by the Wali (Governor) of West Darfur, officials from the Sudanese Judicial and Legislative Council, senior military and police officials and members of the Native Authority, as well as officials from UNAMID.

Since the conflict began in early March between the two tribes, more than 200 people have died in clashes and hundreds have been displaced.

A reconciliation committee was established on 29 April involving native administrations and local leaders, with UNAMID and the Darfur Peace and Reconciliation Council (DPRC) in order to assist the tribes in reaching a lasting peace accord. A conference was organized last month in Zalingei aimed at addressing the causes of the conflict and to discuss ways in bringing the two tribes to a peaceful resolution.

UNAMID conducts technology awareness with local community in Nyala
As part of its capacity building programme, UNAMID organized a workshop at the University of Nyala, South Darfur, aimed at raising technological awareness, including a review of remote sensing and global positioning systems (GPS) and how technology can support managers at all levels for more informed decision making as well as map reading.

The two-day event was attended by more than 200 participants including, teachers and University students and officials from government institutions.

UNAMID patrols
UNAMID military forces conducted 92 patrols including routine, short-range, long-range, night, and humanitarian escort patrols, covering 67 villages and IDP camps during the reporting period.

UNAMID police advisors conducted 110 patrols in villages and internally displaced persons camps.
