Statement by the spokesperson of High Representative Catherine Ashton on the attacks on UNAMID peacekeepers
BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, June 24, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The spokesperson of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and
Security Policy/Vice President of the Commission Catherine Ashton issued the following statement
today:
“We strongly condemn the attack on the AU/UN Hybrid Mission in Sudan (UNAMID) in West
Darfur on 21 June, which has led to the killing of least three Rwandese peacekeepers and the
wounding of others. This attack comes barely one month after another attack in which two Egyptian
peacekeepers lost their lives. Our sympathy is with the families, friends and colleagues of the
victims as well as with UNAMID and the affected Governments.
We continue to fully support UNAMID and deplore any attack on peacekeeping missions,
considered a war crime under International Law. We call on the Government of Sudan to spare no
effort to apprehend and bring perpetrators of these atrocious attacks to justice without delay. These
fatal incidents demonstrate the disturbing security situation in Darfur and the need to focus on the
efforts to find a political solution to the conflict.”
