
Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI trains policemen, gendarmes and soldiers on human rights’ protection
ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, May 27, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Some forty officers and non-commissioned officers from the gendarmerie, police and the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) in Yamoussoukro are attending a training session on human rights being conducted by the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) since Tuesday, 25 May 2010.
The two-day training is taking place in the meeting hall known as “Underwood” of the Republican Guard and is organized by the Regional Human Rights Office in Yamoussoukro in collaboration with the Operations Commander, on the theme “Human Rights and Maintenance of Law and Order”.
According to Ariel Ida Ngondi, the Human Rights Officer in Yamoussoukro, the aim of the training is to sensitize officers and non-commissioned officers, on the need to protect and promote human rights in the current context.
During the opening ceremony of the working session, Captain Boniface Konan, Operations Commander in Yamoussoukro, said it was important for the participants to learn about human rights and to respect them. He called on everyone to pay attention to the training because, he said, “many people think that human rights are enemy, whereas respecting human rights can also protect you”.
The mandate of UNOCI’s Human Rights Division, the functioning of the United Nations agencies and human rights and the role of the Ivorian Public Prosecutor, Human Rights and Ivorians’ rights will be the topics of presentations during the two days. The presenters will be Abdouramane Bakayoko and Omer Kalameu of UNOCI and the Toumodi prosecutor.
