Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI trains NGO network members in Duekoue in the fight against HIV/AIDS

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, May 27, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) is organising a training workshop in Duékoué on «Therapeutic Observance of Antiretroviral (ARV) Treatment, Counselling and Confidentiality Management» in Moyen Cavally region from 26 to 27 May 2010.

Organised for a network of NGOs involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS, the workshop is part of the support provided by UNOCI’s HIV/AIDS unit to partners as a way of overcoming the pandemic.

The choice of Duékoué was not by chance, it was deliberately chosen because of the increasing incidence of sexual abuse and risky behavior among certain members of the community, with regard to sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS. As a result the prevalence in the city of Guemon has increased significantly. Faced with this situation, UNOCI has tried to provide the appropriate response following a request from the NGOs fighting the pandemic.

Some 20 participants, from seven NGOs that fight against HIV/AIDS in Duékoué welcomed the initiative, which according to them, represents an appropriate response with regard to their action, said Fulgence N’Cho, supervisor with the NGO Ruban Rouge. «This training is complete with regard to the different modules it consists of. This will give our peer educators, our community counsellors and we ourselves better knowledge to do the work we do,” he said.  Thanking UNOCI for providing the opportunity to learn more about the issue, Mr. N’cho said the training will result in quality presentations.

For two days, participants will be trained in behaviour change communication, the observance of therapeutic ARV treatment, counselling and managing confidentiality, in an effort to convince those they work with to say no to HIV/AIDS.
