
African Union Commission Chairperson Jean Ping to attend Africa Day celebrations in South Africa
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, May 27, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — At the invitation of the President of the Republic of South Africa, H.E Mr. Jacob Zuma, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Jean Ping, will attend celebrations marking Africa Day scheduled for 29 May 2010 in South Africa.
Observed every 25 May, Africa Day is celebrated this year under the theme: “Building and Maintaining Peace and Security through Sports”.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Jean Ping is expected to deliver a keynote address during the occasion.
Meanwhile, the Africa Day celebration in South Africa will be organized in three phases; the first part will be a comprehensive cultural programme to be held at the Dries Niemandt Welcome Village, in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni. It will include a concert, an art exhibition and a food court festival showcasing African cultural diversity, amongst others.
The second part of the celebration will focus on a football game opposing a South African team to a professional football team from the African continent. Finally, a gala night to be held at the Sandton Convention Center will crown the ceremony of the Africa Day in South Africa.
It is worth recalling that the African Union Commission is celebrating this event, whose theme is linked to sports, in South Africa in order to highlight the fact that the 2010 FIFA World Cup is taking place in Africa.
