Security situation in Darfur
The security situation in Darfur remains tense.
The findings by a UNAMID assessment team sent on 20 May to Jebel Moon, West Darfur, the recent site of more than two weeks of fighting, are expected in the coming days.
Humanitarian assessment mission to West Darfur
An inter-agency team consisting of UN Agencies and UNAMID yesterday undertook a mission to the towns of Mukjar and Bindisi, located about 200 kilometers south of El Geneina, West Darfur, to assess the humanitarian situation of newly displaced persons in the areas. A report is forthcoming.
UNAMID joins in Africa Day celebrations
UNAMID officials, led by Deputy Joint Special Representative (DJSR) Mohamed Yonis, today joined other African missions in the Sudan in celebrating Africa Day.
At a ceremony marking the event, which was hosted by Ambassador Mohamed Irki, Dean of the African group and Algeria’s Ambassador to the Sudan, and Ambassador Mahmoud Kane, Head of the African Union (AU) Liaison Office in the Sudan, the DJSR underscored the historic partnership between the AU and the United Nations in Darfur.
Representing UNAMID Joint Representative Ibrahim Gambari, Mr. Yonis said Africa day was both appropriate and important, “for Sudan is working with the African Union and the United Nations to achieve durable peace and provide all its citizens with the opportunity to work and enjoy the fruits of peace and development.”
Africa Day, earlier known as African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day, was founded during the first Conference of Independent African States, in Ghana on 15 April, 1958.
On 25 May 1963, 31 African leaders convened a summit meeting to found the Organization of African Unity (OAU). They renamed Africa Freedom Day “African Liberation Day” and changed its date to 25 May. The founding date of the OAU is also referred to as “Africa Day.”
In 2002 the OAU established its own successor, the African Union (AU) but the name and date of Africa Day was retained as a celebration of African unity. The theme for Africa Day 2010 is “Building and Sustaining Peace Through Sports.”
UNAMID patrols
UNAMID military forces conducted 78 patrols including routine, short-range, long-range, night, and humanitarian escort patrols, covering 71 villages and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps during the reporting periods.
UNAMID police advisors also conducted 116 patrols in villages and IDP camps.
