Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI donates two classrooms and an office to school in Tai

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, May 26, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) handed over a building comprising two classrooms and an office to the municipal school in Tai, 657 km west of Abidjan, on Friday, 22 May 2010. The building was constructed as part of UNOCI’s Quick Impact Projects programme. The building, estimated to cost 11 million FCFA, will make up for the shortage of classrooms in the school.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, the head of the UNOCI delegation, Severin Agbonoukon, explained that as part of its role to assist the peace process, UNOCI has incorporated community development in peacekeeping by financing Quick Impact Projects. “By providing the Tai municipality with this educational jewel, UNOCI hopes to provide better conditions of learning for the students,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the teachers and the population, the president of the management committee of the school, Dji Etienne and the principal of the school, Tai Goule Guisso thanked UNOCI for the building and for its contribution to resolving the Ivorian crisis.

The official handing-over ceremony, which brought together administrative, political, traditional and religious authorities, as well as the elites, was also an occasion for the awarding of prizes to the best students in the school.
