Security situation in Darfur
The security situation in Darfur remains relatively calm, but unpredictable.
UNAMID military forces conducted 83 patrols including routine, short range, long range, night, and Humanitarian escort patrols, covering 76 villages and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps during the reporting period. UNAMID police advisors also conducted 91 patrols in villages and IDP camps.
President Bashir, UNAMID JSR Gambari meet
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir today met with UNAMID Joint Special Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari to converse at length on a number of significant issues. The one-on-one discussion touched upon the country’s recent elections, the ongoing activities to gain the release of UNAMID’s abducted peacekeepers, and the JSR’s recent diplomatic mission to western Africa.
UNAMID sees increase in women officers
50 female police advisors from Ghana deployed to Darfur yesterday, bringing the total number Ghanaian women officers in UNAMID to 110. Upon completing induction courses, the officers will be deployed to various areas of Darfur.
The Mission’s police are tasked with conducting patrols in and around internally displaced persons camps, providing escort duties in villages and towns throughout Darfur, training local officers, and setting up gender-based activities for local women and children.
UNAMID’s police strength currently stands at 4,719 officers, of which 430 are women. Ghana represents among the largest police-contributing countries to the Mission.
UNAMID, State launch campaign to combat sexual and gender-based violence
UNAMID and the State of South Darfur have unveiled a campaign designed to raise awareness of sexual and gender-based violence. The joint initiative, which launched today in Nyala, one of the Sudan’s largest cities, will use 60 billboards in the region in a bid to start dialogues on this sensitive matter.
