Creating a Pan African Media Portal

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, March 29, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — A joint meeting of experts was held from 23 to 25 March 2010 in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), at the initiative of the Commission of the African Union (AUC) and the European Union (EU), on the “Media and Development” theme.

The meeting brought together fifty high profile participants involved with media in Africa and Europe.

Among the major recommendations made at the end of the meeting, is the upcoming launch of a Pan African Media Portal, which will provide a unique database in the domain.

A Reflection Group, composed of fifteen representatives of institutional structures and media, will propose in the near future, a proposal of the portal.

Participants at the meeting also established a Pan-African network of media to complement the action of the portal. This network would provide a new platform dedicated to sharing, and enable dialogue on issues related to the theme of “Media and Development” in Africa.

This tool will be open to researchers and professionals working in the media sector.

The Addis Ababa meeting was held after the Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) one in September 2008, which had decided among its conclusions, the project of establishing a Pan African Media Portal.
