Climate change meeting to be held in Nairobi

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, March 29, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — A meeting for African Climate Change Negotiators will be convened in Nairobi at the UNEP Headquarters from the 29-30 March 2010. This meeting is jointly convened by the AUC and the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN). It is co financed by AMCEN and the AUC through the AUC’s  Capacity Building Programme on Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), which is an European Commission (EC) funded programme for ACP Africa/Caribean/Pacific) countries.

The main objective of the EC-ACP Capacity Building Programme on MEAs is to enhance the capacity of ACP countries to meet their obligations under MEAs. The programme is funded by the European Commission under the framework of the ACP-EC Partnership Agreement. UNEP is the overall coordinator and facilitator of the programme while the EC and ACP designated the AUC as the hub for the African component of the programme. This unique tripartite partnership -EC/ACP/AUC is once more a demonstration of the commitment of the global community to address environmental issues in developing countries.

This meeting is being held within the context of the implementation of Part 2 of AMCEN’ decision on climate change; i.e. Preparation of Comprehensive Framework of African Climate Change Programmes and its associated frameworks of sub regional climate change programmes. About forty African negotiators are expected to attend the meeting.
