ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, February 25, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Y. J. Choi, on Tuesday, appealed once again for an end to the violence which occurred during the demonstrations against the dissolution of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the government.

The appeal was made at the end of separate meetings with the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI), Henri Konan Bedie and the head of the Rally of Republicans (RDR), Alassane Dramane Ouattara.

The Special Representative said that he had discussed the sociopolitical situation and the electoral process with both men.

“In order to advance the process, calm must prevail”, he said to the press, stressing that this position was one of UNOCI’s principles. In this regard, he announced that the Principal Deputy Special Representative, Abou Moussa, had visited Daloa to offer the Mission’s condolences to the families of the victims and offer UNOCI’s availability to the local authorities.

Mr. Choi also reaffirmed the need to safeguard past achievements, including the provisional electoral list. “The definitive list must be published as soon as possible,” he added.

The Special Representative met the day before with the Facilitator of the inter- Ivorian Dialogue and Burkinabé President, Blaise Compaoré, who had come to Abidjan to hold extended consultations with all of the Ivorian protagonists and diplomats accredited to Côte d’Ivoire.
