
Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI chief attends 18th meeting of heads of UN peace missions in west Africa
DAKAR, Senegal, February 25, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Y.J. Choi, arrived in Dakar, Senegal today to attend the 18th high level meeting of heads of UN peace missions in West Africa on 25 February 2010.
During the one-day meeting, Mr. Choi will brief participants on the evolution of the Ivorian peace process, especially the progress made in the electoral process. In this regard, he will highlight the need to preserve the achievements made, including the provisional electoral list.
Mr. Choi will also discuss problems of common interest in the sub-region with his counterparts. Together, they will look at issues pertaining to women, peace and security as part of the 10th anniversary of UN Resolution 1325, which will be celebrated in October 2010.
UN Resolution 1325 is an important framework which states that women are disproportionately affected by conflict and should therefore have a central role in any peace process, national reconstruction and electoral process. It also highlights the need to protect women and children in conflict areas.
The meeting will be attended by the heads of UN peace missions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinée Bissau and the UN Office in West Africa.
It is held every three months to discuss problems specific to each mission, as well as those of the sub-region.
