United Nations Deputy Special Representative ends mission in Côte d’Ivoire

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, February 23, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Y. J. Choi, presided over a farewell ceremony for his deputy, Georg Charpentier, UN humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Representative of UNDP in Côte d’Ivoire on Friday.

Mr. Choi paid tribute to his colleague who has just completed a three-year mission in the country but who used, he recalled, his 26 years of experience with the United Nations to give new impetus to the coordination between the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) and the United Nations Agencies. UNOCI’s chief promised to maintain this impetus and wished Mr. Charpentier all the best for the next challenges. “He is leaving at a difficult time, but he leaves having seen the posting of the provisional electoral list which he greatly contributed to and which is an achievement,” Mr. Choi stressed.

For his part, Mr. Charpentier welcomed the spirit of collaboration showed by Ivorian and international partners, who made things easier for him in so many ways. “All these achievements would not have been possible if I did not have open and constant collaboration. This is a guarantee that the process will succeed”, he said, after stating that he was leaving with good memories of Côte d’Ivoire and the Ivorians’ sense of humour.

Having joined the Mission in Côte d’Ivoire in March 2007, Mr. Charpentier leaves Côte d’Ivoire to join the United Nations Mission in Sudan where he will be Principal Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General. The ceremony took place in the presence of the diplomatic corps, Government officials, representatives of UN agencies and other partners.
