Validation workshop on African Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators Initiative (AST II)
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, November 26, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Invitation
What: Validation workshop on African Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators Initiative (AST II)
Where: Hilton Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
When: 30 November – 3 December 2009
Who: AU Commission and NEPAD/OST
Why: The workshop will feed directly into the establishment of an African Observatory on Science, Technology and Innovation, whose implementation was agreed upon by the January 2009 AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government. It will be a platform where countries will validate outputs from a survey conducted over the last three years, wherein participating countries have worked hard in conducting R&D and Innovation surveys and developing STI indicators. The Workshop will also prepare the contents of the first African Innovation Outlook.
In 2005, the AUC and NEPAD/OST put together Africa’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action (CPA) which integrated NEPAD/OST and AU Commission programmes into a single programme and policy framework that was launched by the African Ministerial Conference on Science and Technology (AMCOST) and subsequently adopted by the AU Executive Council in Khartoum in 2006. The CPA forms a common platform for Africa’s Science programmes and the ASTII initiative is one of the key flagship projects being championed by NEPAD and UNESCO.
Media representatives are invited to attend the official opening ceremony on 30 November at 9:00
Media enquiries should be addressed to Wynne Musabayana on 0911 101466 or Mrs. Esther Azaa of the AU Commission on 0911 361185
