South Africa / 5th SAHARA Conference

MIDRAND, South Africa, November 13, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — 5th SAHARA Conference, Gallagher Estate, Midrand, 30 November – 3 December 2009

The Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS Research Alliance (SAHARA), a research network within the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), wants to draw your attention to its 5th SAHARA Conference that will be held at Gallagher Estate, Midrand from 30 November to 3 December 2009.

The conference will be held in collaboration with major partners, including UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNDP, CDC, Bill and Belinda Gates Foundation the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), SADC, UNESCO, and AU institutions (including NEPAD).

SAHARA addresses the social aspects of HIV/AIDS in general. This year’s conference will focus specifically on the socio-cultural responses to controversial topics such as cultural issues around male circumcision and homosexuality. Discussions around these topics at the previous SAHARA Conference confirmed the vastly different opinions that exist around these practices.  ”The Snip”: Male circumcision policies in sub-Saharan Africa – is just one of the round table discussion included in the conference programme that is expected to draw wide-spread attention.

Other aspects on HIV/AIDS will be discussed in the following tracks:

·         HIV surveillance (dominant and alternative approaches)

·         Drivers of the epidemic: (including socio-cultural determinants)

·         Prevention (including facilitating and inhibiting social and cultural factors)

·         Treatment, care and support

·         Application of research evidence into practice (including community forums).

The 5th SAHARA Conference coincides with World AIDS Day on 1 December, which will give journalists the opportunity to talk and listen to experts, politicians and people living with HIV/AIDS at a time when the world’s attention is focused on finding new answers to address HIV/AIDS successfully.
