Switzerland / Status of implementation of the agreement with Libya
BERN, Switzerland, August 28, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Switzerland and Libya are implementing the agreement between the two countries step by step. The President is in close contact with the Libyan Prime Minister. The President has received a written assurance from the Libyan Prime Minister that the two Swiss will be able to leave Libya before the end of the month.
Libya insists that both of the Swiss leave the country as business men. Switzerland met this requirement whereby instructions were immediately given for the “Falcon” to return. During the night, the “Falcon” of the Swiss Air Force returned to Switzerland with the Swiss delegation and the luggage of the two business men.
Switzerland is fulfilling all of the obligations in the agreement of 20 August 2009 with Libya without delay and on time. Every effort is being made to ensure that by fulfilling the obligations, the best possible conditions are being created for a rapid return of the two Swiss.
After the Libyan Prime Minister nominated the representative of the Libyan Foreign Office who, in accordance with the agreement, is entrusted with restoring bilateral relations, the President announced that State Secretary Michael Ambühl would be the representative of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). The FDFA has instructed State Secretary Ambühl to contact the Libyan side without delay. The next point in implementing the agreement is the nomination of the judge for the arbitration court who both countries have to appoint. Switzerland will be able to disclose this name in due time.
The President appointed staff at an early stage which is working round the clock to implement the agreement. The staff has been instructed to coordinate and integrate the various contacts (the family of the two business men, the embassy, the federal government, the federal bodies concerned and the Libyan government).
