Security situation in Darfur

The security situation in Darfur has been relatively calm. However, banditry activities continue to be reported in North and South Darfur.

 

UNAMID military conducted a total of 88 patrols in and around the villages and IDP camps. UNAMID police conducted a total of 163 patrols in and around the villages and IDP camps.

 

UNAMID Joint Special Representatives bids farewell to North Darfur

Marking the end of his tour of duty in Darfur, the AU-UN Joint Special Representative for Darfur and Head of UNAMID, Mr. Rodolphe Adada, held a town hall meeting with UNAMID staff in El Fasher to bid them farewell. During the meeting, JSR Adada, thanked UNAMID staff for their support during his Mission, and expressed satisfaction over the way the mission faced challenges and overcame problems mainly as the mission was being established. He commended all stakeholders for supporting him and the mission.

 

JSR Adada paid a courtesy call to the Deputy Wali (Governor) of North Darfur, Mr. Idris Abdallah Hassan. The Deputy Wali commended the efforts exerted by the Mission, in particular by the JSR, in building good working relations between the Government and the Mission.

 

In his response, Mr. Adada said, “UNAMID is a partnership between the AU, UN and Sudan and should be used as a tool to promote peace in Darfur. UNAMID belongs to the people of Darfur and with the spirit of partnership, the Mission will be able to do its job and I am confident that this good cooperation will continue in the future.”

 

African Union Panel on Darfur (AUPD) visits South Darfur

The AUPD undertook a follow-up visit to Sudan from 21 to 30 August, for further consultations with Sudanese stakeholders, both in Khartoum and Darfur before finalizing the report to be submitted to the AU Commission in Addis Ababa. The Panel led by Chairperson, Mr. Thabo Mbeki, former President of the Republic of South Africa, included General Abdusalami Abubakar, former Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Mr. Pierre Buyoya, former President of Burundi. Upon their arrival in Nyala, the panel met with local Government officials and civil society organizations in the region to review the recommendations of their report.

 

UNAMID receives second Jordanian Formed Police Unit (FPU)

The second group of the Jordanian Formed Police Unit (FPU) consisting of 180 officers arrived today in El Fasher, North Darfur. The unit will be deployed in Kabkabiya, North Darfur.

 

Currently, UNAMID has a total of eight FPUs on the ground out of the 19 authorized by the United Nations Security Council resolution (UNSC) 1769; these include (3) from Bangladesh, (1) from Indonesia, (1) from Nepal, (2) from Nigeria and (2) from Jordan. The Mission is also expecting the arrival of the Senegalese FPU this week.
