
EU HR Javier SOLANA today met Ahmedu OULD ABDALLAH, UN Secretary-General Special Representative for Somalia
BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, July 10, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), had a meeting today with Ahmedu Ould Abdallah, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia.
Mr Ould Abdallah updated Mr Solana on the political and security situation in Somalia and voiced his appreciation for the EU’s efforts to combat piracy with its naval taskforce EU NAVFOR ATALANTA. He welcomed the further engagement of the EU in support of the people and institutions of Somalia.
Mr Solana commended the UN’s efforts led by Mr Ould Abdallah with the backing of the international community. He stressed the need to address the root causes of piracy, which requires resolute and coordinated international efforts. He underlined that the EU was willing to participate actively in the consolidation of the legitimate institutions of Somalia, including the security institutions through training.
Mr Solana and Mr Ould Abdallah firmly condemned the acts carried out by violent opposition groups, which should immediately end their military operations and join the national reconciliation effort. They welcomed the African Union’s decision to increase the strength of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
The High Representative and the UNSGSR discussed the situation in the region and took note of the communiqué of the African Union summit in Sirte and the UN Security Council Presidential Statement of 9 July 2009.
