Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI will support dissemination of electoral lists

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, July 10, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Summary of UNOCI weekly press conference

The United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) will provide support for the dissemination of electoral lists throughout the country, the Mission’s Spokesman, Hamadoun Touré, announced on Thursday during its weekly press conference.

UNOCI, Mr. Touré added, encourages the parties involved to take the appropriate measures to ensure the success of the post-enrolment operations.

The Spokesman also said that with the end of registration, the focus should now be on how well the 68 coordination centres are functioning. This means, he explained: “the digitalisation of files, data processing and cross-checking them with past files and the elimination of multiple entries at the local and national level before the publication of the provisional electoral list, while disputes will now be a challenge for institutions involved in identification”.

According to Mr. Touré, apart from the support given to the Ivorian party with the provision of nine generators to facilitate the processing of data in the main coordination centres which has been done since the first phase of the operation, UNOCI is also going to contribute to the capacity building for the benefit of commissioners dealing with the operation.

The aim, he explained, is “to facilitate the resolution of disputes, set up uniform systems for dealing with them at the local electoral commissions and prevent any risk of delays that could cause slippages in the overall electoral timetable”.

Mr. Toure had earlier announced that the grand finale of the Artistic Caravan for Peace will be held at Yopougon Sports Complex on Saturday, 11 July 2009. The Caravan, which was launched in Dimbokro on 14 June 2009, has visited 13 towns and cities namely Tanda, Agnibilekro, Sinfra, Soubré, Méagui, Séguéla, Bouaflé, Dabakala, Béoumi, Daoukro, Adzopé, Divo and Aboisso. The grand finale will be attended by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Y.J. Choi, Ivorian Government officials and people from the different Abidjan neighbourhoods.

The Spokesman recalled that during the past three weeks Ivorian musicians, comedians and dance groups had relayed messages of peace, social cohesion and national reconciliation. “Through their art, talent and know-how, they thus multiplied UNOCI’s efforts to the large number of people who attended the different stages of the Caravan, » he added.

The Caravan provided the opportunity to sensitise the population on the importance of a peaceful environment for the holding of presidential elections which are scheduled for 29 November 2009. ”This and the identification and voter registration operation, which reached 6,514,000 people, represent tangible progress with regard to the implementation of the Ouagadougou Political Agreement,” he concluded.
