LRA warrants now outstanding for four years
THE HAGUE, Netherland, July 9, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — ICC-CPI-20090708-PR434
On Wednesday 8 July 2005, ICC judges issued arrest warrants against Joseph Kony and other senior LRA commanders including Okot Odhiambo and Dominic Ongwen for crimes against humanity and war crimes they are suspected to have committed between 2002 and 2004. They are alleged to have abducted children and transformed them into soldiers and sexual slaves.
Four years have since passed and the suspects remain at large. The Court welcomes past state co-operation in the effort to apprehend the LRA fugitives. It takes encouragement from the fact that the governments of the region are now acting together with the support of MONUC to address the issue of arresting LRA suspects. The Court remains hopeful that continued concerted efforts will lead to the enforcement of the warrants.
