Security situation in Darfur
The general security situation in Darfur has been relatively calm. However, residents of internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps continue to experience indiscriminate shooting by unknown persons during the night in the camps. With regard to the humanitarian situation, IDPs continue to raise complaints about the lack of water, as well as other physical, social and educational facilities.
During the past 24 hours, UNAMID military conducted 86 patrols including confidence-building, escort patrols and nine night patrols covering 66 villages and IDP camps during the reporting period. UNAMID Police advisers conducted 130 patrols in and around the villages and IDP camps.
UNAMID Force Commander attends medal parade in South Darfur
UNAMID Force Commander, General Martin Luther Agwai, today travelled to Nyala town, South Darfur, where he presented medals to troops of the Chinese Engineering Company. He commended the troops for their efforts and contribution to the Mission.
The Chinese Engineering Company arrived in UNAMID in July 2008, and has been responsible for the construction and expansion of UNAMID camps in Darfur.
UNAMID Police Commissioner conducts long-range patrol
UNAMID Police Commissioner, Micheal Fryer, today conducted a long-range patrol to Tabit and Gallab villages, south of Zam Zam internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp in North Darfur. The patrol is part of a series of patrols currently being conducted by the Mission to review the general security situation in Darfur.
