CAADP Day / Striving to place agriculture as top priority on Africa’s agenda

TRIPOLI, Libya, June 29, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Given that the theme of the 13th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit being held in Sirte Libya, is devoted to the agriculture sector in Africa, the opportunities of regional agricultural trade and market systems, the challenges for stimulating economic transformation and growth in Africa, and the financing of the agriculture sector for sustainable development, the African Union Commission will be celebrating the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP) Day tomorrow, Saturday 27 June 2009, in Tripoli, Libya, at the margins of the AU Summit, under the theme: “Investing in Agriculture for Economic Growth and Food Security”.

Organized in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, the celebration of CAADP Day will feature presentations by eminent African experts in agriculture from across the continent.

According to the organizers, the dialogue for the “CAADP Day” will focus on concrete actions that both Africa and the international development community genuinely believe can be used to operationalise CAADP at the country level while enhancing awareness, and conduct education and training exercises on the CAADP processes.

Meanwhile, the CAADP Day is intended to facilitate a principled dialogue between state and non-state actors, national and international stakeholders, and to firmly establish CAADP as the framework for country-driven development of the agricultural sector. It will  highlight, and help deepen the involvement of farmers’ organisations, private business entities and Africa’s academic and research institutions in the CAADP process, as well as reaffirm the commitments of African governments and international development partners to the provision of coordinated support to CAADP implementation at country and regional levels.
