UNAMID Force Commander Visits Troops in North Darfur
UNAMID Force Commander, General Martin Luther Agwai today visited the South African contingent which is deployed in Kutum, North Darfur. Upon arrival, General Agwai was briefed on the security and operational situation in the region.
This is part of his routine duties to visit the troops deployed in the sectors to discuss operational matters and hear their concerns and challenges they may be facing.
Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur visits UNAMID Headquarters
Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur Mr. Djibril Bassole today paid a one-day visit to the North Darfur capital of El Fasher, where he held a meeting with Acting Joint Special Representative, Mr. Henry Anyidoho and other senior officials.
During the meeting, Mr. Bassole briefed on the steps taken as well as progress made regarding the peace process, and the outcome of the Doha talks between the Government of Sudan and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM).
In an effort to expand the mediation efforts, Mr. Bassole also met with members of the native administration and Arab leaders in El Fasher to hear their views and discuss the way forward.
UNAMID Team conducts Assessment Mission
A UNAMID Team comprising of Humanitarian Affairs, Civil Affairs and Human Rights conducted an assessment mission to Adwa village, about 40 km north of Nyala town in South Darfur yesterday, to confirm reports of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who have returned to their village. The team held a meeting with traditional leaders (Umdas and Sheikhs) and Government of Sudan Police Commander at Adwa who confirmed that about 356 families had returned from various IDP camps.
During the meeting, the residents requested for food, tents and agricultural equipment.
AUPD Wraps- up its Mission in Sudan
Today, the African Union Panel on Darfur (AUPD), chaired by former South African President Thabo Mbeki and including former Burundian President Pierre Buyoya, former Nigerian President Abdulsalami Abubakar, other African dignitaries, concluded its third mission to Sudan.
During the past 10 days, the AUPD held public hearings on the Darfur conflict to determine how best to expedite the peace process to urgently create conditions to promote justice, healing, and reconciliation in Darfur. The Panel met with Sudan political parties, civil society representatives, rebel movements, Arab nomads, native administrators, tribal leaders, internally displaced persons (IDP), women, youth, and others in Khartoum; En Siro, North Darfur; El Fasher, North Darfur; Nyala, South Darfur; El Geneina and Zalingei, West Darfur.
The AUPD will conduct several additional hearings and consultations and draft recommendations to be presented to the AU before making them available to the public.
Security Situation in Darfur
The security situation in Darfur is reported to be relatively calm. Regarding the humanitarian situation, residents in the camps continue to complain of a lack of potable water, schools and medical facilities in the village.
UNAMID military conducted a total of 87 patrols including confidence-building, escort patrols, night patrols and investigation patrols covering fifty seven (57) villages/IDP Camps during the reporting period. Similarly, UNAMID Police Advisers conducted a total of 143 patrols in and around the villages and IDP camps.
