Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI head examines progress made in peace process with Ivorian prime minister
ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, May 29, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, YJ Choi, was received on Thursday by Prime Minister Guillaume Soro at the Office of the Prime Minister in Abidjan. Their discussions focused on progress made in the Ivorian peace process.
At the end of their encounter, the head of the UN mission said the meeting was motivated by recent advances made along the road to peace. These, he said, included the setting of a date for the first round of the presidential election, the transfer of powers and the official publication by Mr. Choi himself, of the modus operandi for carrying out the mandate of certifying the Ivorian elections, conferred upon him by the UN Security Council.
However, while Mr. Choi welcomed the important steps made in the peace process, he recognized that much remained to be done. “There will be challenges to be met in order to achieve elections on 29 November [2009], but we decided to do everything for the challenges to be met successfully,” he said.
