Dozens of Sierra Leonean police officers join UNAMID

The first batch of more than 60 new Sierra Leonean police officers has arrived today in El Fasher, North Darfur, to start work with the joint African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID). Some 40 officers flew in today, with the remaining 22 due tomorrow. They will be deployed around the region after completing their induction training over the next two weeks.

UNAMID’s Deputy Police Commissioner, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, welcomed the new officers from Sierra Leone (52 men and 10 women), saying their arrival will help strengthen the efforts of the Mission’s police component to bring peace and stability to Darfur.

Mission’s military leadership meets Kenyan military officer

UNAMID’s Force Commander, Gen. Martin Luther Agwai, and other senior military officers in the Mission today met with Gen. J. M. Kianga, the Chief of General Staff in the Kenyan military, to discuss deployment and staffing issues and the latest security developments on the ground in Darfur.

UNAMID holds workshop on Quick Impact Projects (QIPs)

UNAMID’s civil affairs section today held the first in a series of workshops for the Mission’s military and police officers on how to prepare and monitor QIPs across the region. The workshop in El Fasher, in which nearly 50 military and police officers took part, was conducted so that the officers working in remote areas of Darfur have the skills and knowledge to implement QIPs, which are small-scale projects designed to help local communities and funded by UNAMID.

Security situation in Darfur

The security situation today is reported to be relatively calm. During the past 24 hours, UNAMID’s military component carried out 69 confidence-building patrols, escorts, night patrols and investigative patrols, while UNAMID’s police component conducted 85 patrols and escorts, including firewood and grass escorts, in the same period.

Following the fighting earlier this week in the North Darfur town of Umm Barru between Sudanese Government forces and armed elements with the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), UNAMID yesterday evacuated 19 seriously injured people for further treatment and also brought more medical supplies to the affected area. The situation around Umm Barru is reported to be relatively stable today.
