African Union chairperson, leader Ghadafi meets officials of the Commission
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, March 30, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The chairperson of the African Union Commission, Muammar Al- Ghaddafi, Leader of the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, was on a working visit on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 March 2009, at the headquarters of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Leader Ghaddafi met with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Deputy Chairperson of the Commission, the AU Commissioners and the Heads of all the services directly attached to the Cabinet of the AUC Chairperson.
In his introductory remarks, Leader Ghaddafi expressed satisfaction on the general management of the Commission. He said his main objective is to acquaint himself as much as possible on the state of affairs of the AU, through regular meetings with the Commission as well as discuss AU’s common positions, on the recent happenings around the world. “To ensure that Africa speak with one voice”, he emphasized.
Issues discussed during the meeting included the state of the three financial institutions; the African Development Bank, the African Central Bank and the African Monetary Fund. Conflict management, post-conflict reconstruction, the State of ratification of the OAU – AU Treaties and AU Charters, the element of Universal jurisdiction, the new AU flag competition, were amongst the issues discussed during this meeting.
The meeting was also a forum for Leader Ghadafi to acquaint himself with the state of preparedness of the 12th Extraordinary Executive Council meeting, scheduled to take place on the 15th and 16th March 2009, in Syrte, Libya.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the African Union underscored that, in line with his new functions at the helm of the Union, he has committed himself to completely devote his time for the Union by holding regular meetings and working very closely with the Commission.
He underscored the need to multiply such working sessions which he said could be organized either at the AUC headquarters in Addis Ababa, in Tripoli or any other country that is willing to host the meetings.
