
Communiqué on the second working visit of the chairperson of the African Union, H.E. brother leader Muammar Elgaddafi, leader of the Libyan revolution, to the African Union Commission (AUC)
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, March 30, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — In the framework of regular consultations between the Chairperson of the Union and the AU Commission, H.E. Brother Leader Muammar El Gaddafi, paid a second working visit to the Commission on 28 and 29 March 2009. The first visit at the Commission had taken place on 5 February 2009 soon after his election as Chairperson of the Union. He was accompanied by H.E. Dr. Ali Triki, Secretary for the African Union Affairs and Chairperson of the Executive Council of the African Union and H.E. Ali Awidan, Chairperson of the PRC. He met, in two sessions, Members of the Commission and some Senior Officials led by the Chairperson of the Commission, H.E. Mr. Jean Ping, assisted by his Deputy Chairperson, H.E. Mr. Erastus Mwencha.
During this visit, the Chairperson reiterated his personal commitment and determination to closely monitor the programmes and activities of the African Union and particularly those of the Commission, with special emphasis on the efforts to be deployed to fully implement the Decisions and Declarations adopted by the Assembly of the Union. He also stressed the need for all other AU Organs to work in tandem so as to achieve the objectives and goals of the Union. He undertook to engage the Commission and all other Organs to be given necessary support so as to effectively deliver the tasks entrusted to each of them and to account for the results achieved in this respect.
During the extensive exchange of views, the Chairperson of the Union and members of the Commission discussed, among others, the following critical issues of common interest:
The Status of preparations for the 12th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council to be held in Sirte, Libya, from 15 to 16 April 2009;
The Status of preparations for the establishment of the Financial Institutions provided for in the Constitutive Act, namely the African Investment Bank, the African Central Bank and the African Monetary Fund;
The Status of Implementation of some critical Decisions of the Assembly such as those referring to the abuse of the principle of universal jurisdiction and the request to the UN for a suspension of the indictment of the President of the Sudan;
Current conflict situations in the continent;
The Status of ratification of all Legal Instruments adopted by the Union;
The administrative and financial situation in the Commission;
The Mechanism for carrying out regular consultations with the Office of the Chairperson of the Union.
The Chairperson of the Union provided guidance on the major issues confronting the continent and reaffirmed his readiness to work closely with the Commission for the achievement of the objectives of the Union.
