United Nations Secretary-General arrives in South Africa on official visit

 

PRETORIA, South Africa, February 25, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in South Africa today on official visit as part of his five-nation tour of Africa. He was met upon arrival by senior South African government officials who included Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

 

The Secretary-General is scheduled to hold talks with President Kgalema Motlanthe and other government officials including Finance Minister Trevor Manuel and the Minister of Environment Affairs and Tourism, Marthinus Van Schalkwyk. Their discussions will focus on, among other issues, the current
global financial crisis and climate change.

 

During his visit, from 24-26 February, the Secretary-General is also expected to meet with former President Nelson Mandela. From South Africa, Mr. Ban is scheduled to travel to Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Egypt.
