Completion of DIS Training and Deployment in Eastern Chad

NDJAMENA, Chad, February 25, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — A ceremony marking the completion of the training of the Détachement intégré de Sécurité (DIS), and the official launching of the deployment of its elements will take place in Abeche on 26 February 2009. Several high level officials, including government members, local authorities, members of the international community and NGOs, and representatives of the UN system will be present.

In line with the UN Security Council’s resolutions 1778 (2007) and 1834 (2008), the United Nations Mission in Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT) has trained a total of 850 elements of the DIS, all from the Chadian police and the gendarmerie.

The DIS is a humanitarian protection force tasked with protecting Darfur refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and providing humanitarian assistance inside the camps and in surrounding communities. Currently, there are 12 refugee camps and some 30 IDP sites in Chad.

The newly-trained DIS elements are deployed in six stations in eastern Chad, including in Abeche, Farchana, Goz Beida, Guereda, Iriba and Bahai.
