EL FASHER (DARFUR), Sudan, January 27, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Update on security situation in North and South Darfur

UNAMID reports that the security situation in the area remains tense. Ground and aerial bombings by the Government continued this morning approximately 9 kms from El Fasher in an attempt to clear the area of armed movements who had advanced towards the outskirts of the city yesterday. There have been no reports of death and casualties among civilians and UNAMID personnel. El Fasher airport has re-opened but movement of personnel remains restricted.

 

Fighting between the Government and JEM also continued in Muhajeriya, South Darfur resulting in approximately 3,000 people gathering around UNAMID camp seeking shelter and protection. Three civilians were reportedly injured and are currently receiving treatment in the MSF hospital
