
Ghana / People’s Republic of China / Contract for the construction of a General Hospital
ACCRA, Ghana, January 6, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Government of Ghana (GOG) has signed a contract with the People’s Republic of China (PROC) for the construction of a General Hospital at Teshie in Accra.
Briefing the press yesterday on the background to this contract, the Head of Capital Investment Management Unit at the Ministry of Health (MOH), Mr Jackson G K Abankwah, said, “The PROC agreed to construct a 100-bed General Hospital with a Malaria Research Centre upon a request by the GOG.”
“The design and construction of the hospital is being financially supported by the PROC while the GOG bears the responsibility of providing land for the construction, demolition of existing structures above and underground, provide utilities such as water, electricity, roads and telecommunication to the site,” he added.
The General Hospital, which is estimated to be completed in 16 months at the cost of RMB 51,000,000.00 (US $ 7.28 million),will have facilities such as full medical equipment, out-patient unit, maternity and children unit, accident and emergency unit among others such a the Anti-Malaria Research Unit.
Major Courage Quashigah(Rtd), the Minister for Health, who signed on behalf of the GOG said it is time Ghana has its traditional medicine closely attached to the orthodox medicine being given to patients in hospitals like it is being done in China and for once ,that is going to be done.
He also commended the PROC for conceding to this contract to build a General Hospital for Ghana.
On his part, Mr Hu Yujie, the Counsellor at the Embassy of PROC to Ghana, said his country is always prepared to help Ghana whenever the need arises.
Mr Feng Nian, the Managing Director of China Geo-Engineering Company, the company constructing the hospital, signed the contract on behalf of the Chinese government.
