Conference on “Water for Agriculture and Energy in Africa / the Challenges of Climate Change” / Sirte, Libya, 15-17 December 2008

 

TRIPOLI, Libya, December 3, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — A Conference of 53 African nations will examine a detailed plan prepared  together with  FAO for a $65 billion “Blue Revolution” designed to harness Africa’s largely untapped water resources to produce more food and energy.

With its population set to double by 2050, Africa needs to triple its food production in the next four decades. It also needs to bring electricity to millions of factories and homes to spur the continent’s economic development.

As chair of UN Water, the inter-agency mechanism coordinating the UN’s water-related activities, FAO prepared National Investment Briefs for each of the 53 countries detailing the investments required and their cost.

The Conference is organized by FAO together with the Libyan Government, the African Union, the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), the African Development Bank and the Economic Commission for Africa, among others.
